Industry rallies round for Haiti quake disaster

JCB, the world's third largest manufacturer of construction equipment, is donating diggers worth $150,000 to help the disaster relief effort in Haiti following the devastating earthquake that is feared to have killed hundreds of thousands of people.

The gift of two 3CX backhoe loaders is being made by JCB chairman, Sir Anthony Bamford, in response to an appeal from relief agencies for foreign aid.

The machines are being made available to the US government, which is taking a leading role in the relief effort on the Caribbean island that was hit by an earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale last Tuesday.

Along with JCB, recycling expert, Redeem, is urging the UK public to help the victims of the Haiti earthquake by donating old mobile phones and inkjet cartridges to its emergency Haiti Recycling Appeal.

With an estimated 90 million mobile phones thought to be lying around in homes across the UK, Redeem is urging people to send old mobile phones and inkjet cartridges, in any condition, to a freepost address or arrange for free collections. The products will all be recycled to raise funds to go towards helping the hundreds of thousands of Haitian people who desperately need aid.

Jamie Rae of Redeem said: “This catastrophic earthquake has had the most appalling impact on the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and the people of Haiti need our help more than we can imagine. We recognise that across the country we are still dealing with a very tough economic climate, so we wanted to offer an alternative way for people to donate to the disaster relief.”
