Youngsters at St Dennis Primary School in St Austell, Cornwall, were celebrating after being announced winners of the Big Yellow Pages Art Competition 2009.

The schoolchildren used old Yellow Pages directories to build their artwork, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, as part of the Yellow Woods Challenge; an environmental campaign for schools based on recycling old Yellow Pages directories.

Naomi Wilkinson, Five TV children’s presenter and Big Yellow Pages Art Competition judge, chose Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as one of six finalists to go head-to-head in an online public vote.

The life-size creation made from old Yellow Pages directories went on to receive the most votes during the online voting period from 25 November to 9 December.

Earlier this month it was announced as the national winner and awarded £1,000 from Yell.

Second place went to Upton Cross Primary School in Liskeard and in third place was Afon Taf High School in Merthyr Tydfil.

Kimberley Watts-Fitzsimmons, corporate responsibility manager at Yell said: “Entries received in the 2009 Big Yellow Pages Art Competition were fantastic. They once again show the tremendous level of creativity and environmental awareness within our schools.”

The Yellow Woods Challenge was launched in 2002 and is Yell’s environmental campaign for schools run in partnership with the Woodland Trust and local authorities across the UK. The challenge aims to recycle old Yellow Pages directories and reduce demand on landfill sites, educate schoolchildren about recycling, build on its relationship with the Woodland Trust as well as support its efforts in helping keep native woodlands.
