Government’s upcoming Resources and Waste Strategy has been given a nudge by the Aldersgate Group after it issued a report of recommendations for key policy priorities.

The briefing, No Time to Waste: An Effective Resources and Waste Strategy, urged government to provide clear policy direction by linking resource efficiency to existing targets and updating the strategy every five years.

It also called for tax incentives to encourage businesses to develop resource efficient goods and services.

Aldersgate Group predict that greater resource efficiency could deliver a total net gain in Gross Value Added of £76bn by 2030.

The report also recommended developing metrics which better reflect the best environmental outcome for resources and improving producer responsibility to incentivise businesses to take greater responsibility over their products or services.

Victoria Fleming-Williams, lead policy paper author and policy manager at the Aldersgate Group, said: “It’s high time for resource efficiency to cease to be an overlooked area of policy and for government to use the public procurement, regulatory and fiscal levers at its disposal to make the UK economy a world-leading resource efficient economy.”

Many business leaders agreed with the report.

RWW monthly blogger and SUEZ external affairs director Adam Read said: "There is so much work to be done to overhaul the UK’s approach to resource management, but the prize will be to spur new levels of productivity and economic competitiveness.

"SUEZ warmly welcomes the Aldersgate Group policy paper which sets out many of the priority areas that must be tackled.

The report comes just days after the EU officially published its Circular Economy Package, with the new rules coming into full effect from 4 July.
