Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) will use 100% recycled PET for its bottles by 2020.

The drinks bottler has signed an agreement with Loop Industries in a bid to accelerate the increased use of recycled materials.

Loop provides recycling technology which turns low quality plastic destined for landfill to be turned into new, virgin-quality Loop PET plastic.

The technology decouples plastic from fossil fuels by depolymerising waste polyester plastic to its monomers.

These monomers are then re-polymerised to create virgin-quality polyester plastic which can be used in food-grade packaging.

Ron Lewis, chief supply chain officer at CCEP said: “Like all responsible companies, we need to be selective in choosing our packaging materials so that we continue to eliminate waste and work to reduce the environmental impact.

“Investments like this one with Loop Industries support our goal to ensure that at least 50% of the material we use for our PET bottles comes from recycled plastic and will help us divert more materials from landfills and build a stronger circular plastic economy.”
