Diaego remove plastic packaging from Guinness

The new packaging will reduce Diaego's plastic waste by 400 tonnes

Guinness parent company Diaego will remove plastic ring carriers and shrink wrap from its multipacks, reducing its plastic waste by 400 tonnes.

Multi-can packs of Guinness, Harp and Smithwick’s will be replaced with sustainably sourced, recyclable and fully biodegradable cardboard packs.

The new packaging will be on shelves on the island of Ireland from August 2019, with other international markets to follow in 2020.

Individual cans, including the widgets inside cans of draught Guinness, are fully recyclable.

David Cutter, Diageo’s chief sustainability officers and president of global supply and prucrement, said: “Great packaging is essential for our products. We have been working tirelessly to make our packaging more environmentally-friendly and I’m thrilled with this outcome for Guinness and other global beer brands.”

Diaego has set a target of all plastics to be recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025.

Last year, Carlsberg replaced plastic ring carriers with recyclable glue.

Corona followed suit, launching a plant-based biodegradable fibres made from a mix of by-product waste and compostable materials.
