Khan is planning to introduce a budget for DRS in April

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has written to Environment Secretary Michael Gove to request government support for a deposit return scheme (DRS) pilot in London.

The request was based on a London Assembly Environment Committee report ‘Bottled water’ which looked at environmental impacts of plastics.

Khan is planning to introduce a budget for a DRS in April.

Leonie Cooper, chair of the environment committee, said: “We welcome London being a test-bed to explore the range of options available in a joint effort to eradicate plastic waste.

We are encouraged by the positive noises made in the budget and call on the government to go further- for the sake of our planet.”
