The new warehouse aims to serve 49 charities and community groups

UK food redistribution charity FareShare has opened a warehouse in Milton Keynes.

The FareShare South Midlands warehouse, based in Bletchley, is the charity’s 25th in the UK.

It aims to serve 49 charities and community groups in the region and will provide an estimated 370,000 meals to those in need over the next year.

FareShare redistributes quality surplus food to all kinds of charities, such as homeless hostels, school breakfast groups, rehabilitation centres, and elderly lunch clubs.

The Bletchley location of the new warehouse was chosen in light of the region’s high proportion of vulnerable people in need of meal support. More than one in three children in Milton Keynes are living in poverty.

FareShare South Midlands is running in partnership with the South Oxfordshire Food and Education Alliance (SOFEA), a charity that works with young people to build their skills and employability.

Richard Kennell, CEO of FareShare South Midlands and SOFEA, said: “SOFEA first launched in partnership with FareShare five years ago, when we opened FareShare’s Thames Valley branch.

“In just five years, we have saved 1,000 tonnes of surplus food from waste whilst also supporting over 250 disadvantaged young people through our education programmes.

“At SOFEA, we believe everyone should have access to quality food and education – and we look forward to working with the community in Milton Keynes to make this vision a reality.”

The warehouse’s opening was made possible thanks to investment from Asda as part of its Fight Hunger Create Change programme.

The programme, involving a partnership between Asda, FareShare, and alternative food charity the Trussell Trust, will see Asda invest more than £20 million over three years to help both charities build infrastructure and expand their services.
