Abel & Cole's refillables delivery service is set to open to the general public by the end of February

Abel & Cole is set to trial a sustainable refillables delivery service, making it the UK’s first online retailer to offer such a service as part of a normal weekly shop.

The organic grocery company will remove single-use packaging from a range of staple pantry items and deliver them instead in reusable pots nicknamed ‘VIPs’ – Very Important Pots.

Abel & Cole will collect the pots for reuse the week after delivering them.

The trial was developed in collaboration with specialist zero waste consultants Unpackaged.

The service, which is called Club Zero, is expected to open to the general public by the end of February.

Hannah Shipton, managing director at Abel & Cole, said: “People have become increasingly aware of climate change and we have witnessed a huge growth in the appetite for sustainable products and ways to shop.

“I hope Club Zero helps anyone looking to cut down on single-use packaging, particularly those without the ability to get to a zero waste refill shop or those not wanting to jump in the car to get to one (undoing their intention).”

Abel & Cole has long been delivering its products in reusable cardboard boxes, saving around 55m single-use plastic bags from landfill.

In 2019, the company was certified as a B Corp.
