48% of food retailers ranked food waste as the most important issue

Tackling food waste is the now the number one issue for food retailers to tackle, according to new research from software consultancy ThoughtWorks.

Of the 225 UK food retailers asked what the biggest impact over the next 10 years would be, 48% ranked food waste as most important, followed by managing costs at 36% and ecommerce threat to physical retail at 23%.

Food waste was more important to women than men, with smaller retailers of less than 50 employees ranked as more passionate about the cause.

Kevin Flynn, director of retail strategy at ThoughtWorks, said: “Despite today’s seemingly one-dimensional industry focus on cheap food, food retailers are aware of the sea change that is coming.

“Extreme weather and its impact on global food supply and prices, the rising cost of energy and consumers asking more fundamental questions about well-being and where their food comes from – all these issues will combine to create a new landscape in food retail during the next 10 years.”
